recipe of the week

I'm cheating again...this week's recipe is found on www.allrecipes.com, and it is Yummy Honey Chicken Kabobs. I used chicken, a red bell pepper, and some grape and cherry tomatoes. Great with corn on the cob and mashed potatoes (my kids still dipped their chicken in ketchup, of course). You only have to marinade for a few hours, and it still has a great flavor.

be still and know that He is God

At the prompting of a friend, I am sharing part of an email I had sent one of my pastors the other day....

Elijah withdrew to the cave at Horeb (desolation), calliing Elijah out of the cave, the Lord told him, "Go forth, and stand on the mountain before the Lord"(v. 11). As Elijah stepped out of the cave's darkness, an awesome thing occurred. The Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. (1 Kings 19: 11-12) This gentle blowing is the Holy Spirit subduing the activities of earth for the Lord's approach...If we will attain the power needed at the end of this age, we must learn to detect without great signs, the whisper of God's wind. He will not fight for our attention, he must be sought. He will not startle us, He must be perceived. It took no special skill to "discern" the earthquake, the fire or the great storm. But to sense the gentle blowing of God, our other activities must cease. In our world of great pressures and continual distractions, the attention of our hearts must rise to the invisible world of God's Spirit. We must learn to "see" Him who is unseen. (p. 25, The Place of Immunity, Francis Frangipane)

What I feel the Lord gave me upon reading the above: Satan's most effective tactic in this present time is busy-ness and distraction. It's surrounding us with the noise of media- we live in the age of the i-Pod (people can be umbilically attached to noise which drowns out the voice of God). Are we afraid of silence? That silence, that gentle blowing can be a terrifying thing- Elijah "wrapped his face in his mantle" (v. 13). Satan would have us to focus on the earthquakes and wars, on soaring gas prices and Brad and Angelina's new baby. He would have us to be concerned with wearing the latest fashion or how our homes are decorated (he would even distract us with seemingly good things). There is an actual force at work trying to prevent us from drawing near to the silence which is the prelude to the Lord's presence. We must be proactive about entering the place of God's rest- not implying that we become inactive, but that God has become active. Do we want to see the activity of God? We need to SIT DOWN and LISTEN.

fun with cousins

Tonight we got together in the home of Jon's grandparents to celebrate the 40th birthday of his aunt Melanie (a very young 40-year old, I might add). The kids endured the heat and mosquitoes for a lively game of keep-away, mostly ending up in a sweaty, laughing pile of little boys!

fun at the pool

My camera lens was dirty, but I wanted to share a couple of pics from the pool we've joined for the summer...

recipe of the week

I thought I would try posting a new recipe once a week, something that's been a real hit at my house, even if it's just a link. OK, so here's the first one: www.allrecipes.com, "summer squash casserole," submitted by Jen. You can make it with zucchini or yellow squash, my neighbor gave me a ton of yellow squash from her garden so that's what I used, and it was awesome. Also, I left out the carrots. This is a rich dish, so it would go best with something like grilled chicken. Enjoy!

More from the Mountains...

Our Trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains

Fun was had by all during our 5 day adventure to the Smokies. Our house was literally at the top of a mountain, with a view that we already missed our first night back home. Good friends, good times, and good coffee, how can you beat that combination?

Here's the Gang

First post

Greetings, family and friends! I decided to take the time to set up a blog after a friend of mine (hello, Sharon!) shared hers with me. Since I have so many friends and family out of town, I thought it would be a fun way to keep everyone informed about the goings-on in my busy household. Love to all~Shannon
